I captured this African Skimmer just after sunrise on the Chobe River, Botswana. Skimmers are named for their feeding technique, where they fly low over water bodies like the Chobe River with their lower mandible cutting through the water surface. They use their unique beaks to skim the water, creating a slight, almost rhythmic, slicing motion. This method allows them to catch small fish near the river's surface. The lower beak is longer than the upper beak, aiding in their fishing strategy.
These birds prefer sandbanks or riverbanks for nesting and resting. The Chobe River provides an ideal habitat for these skimmers with its slow-moving waters and abundant fish populations.
